About Prof. (h.c.). Dr. Peter Vince Balint
Peter V. Balint became a physician at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. He has been working for the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy in Budapest since 1989. Currently he is the Head of the 3rd Department of Rheumatology.
In 1991 he graduated in rheumatology and physiotherapy and obtained board certification. He has a particular interest in musculoskeletal ultrasonography since 1991. He graduated from the University of Glasgow for his PhD work in 2002 (Ultrasound Imaging in Joint and Soft Tissue Inflammation) under the supervision of Prof. Roger D. Sturrock. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) in 2007. Since 1990 he has published more than 150 papers, 20 books and book chapters, has been an invited speaker at more than 90 international meetings, and an organizer and convenor of several musculoskeletal ultrasound courses. He is a member of EULAR/OMERACT Ultrasound Special Interest Group, USSONAR-MSSK, EFSUMB, GRAPPA and Association of Hungarian Rheumatologists (currently, he is the Treasurer of the Association). In the past he was also a member of the EULAR Standing Committee on Musculoskeletal Imaging. He defended his habilitation thesis “The Role of Ultrasonography in Assessing Synovitis, Tendon Damage and Cartilage Destruction in Rheumatoid Arthritis” in 2014 at the University of Debrecen, and the Senate of Semmelweis University elected him Honoris causa Professor in 2015.He became a co-chairman with Tony Reginato of ACR Ultrasound Study Group in 2011-2016. He is a reviewer of several international rheumatology journals in the field of sonography and is the editor of the Imaging Section of Hungarian Rheumatology. His unit was elected as an EULAR Imaging Excellence Centre between 2015-2020.
