The head of the Department of Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology at the University Hospital in Bonn, Professor Valentin Schafer MD will be carrying out a live demonstration of the diagnosis of Gaint-cell arthritis through the axillary artery.
By examining the axillary artery it will make the diagnosis for GCA a lot easier. This is because the axillary artery is a superficial vessel and is, therefore, a lot larger and easier to detect any anomalies.
Professor Valentin starts of the ultrasound scan in longitudinal section and demonstrates how you would locate the axillary artery on a patient's arm. Professor Schafer then goes on to explain how to identify GCA in an axilllary artery by the naked eye and by using Doppler.
