Lene Terslev, PHD, is a Consultant in Rheumatology & Head of the Ultrasound Division in Glostrup Hospital, Denmark. In this video she carries out a live demonstration on using Ultrasound Scanning to assess the Salivary Glands.
Using ultrasound is very easy to assess both the parotid gland and the Submandibular gland for pathology, while in rheumatology, it is important to pay specific attention to the glands in relation to Salivary Gland Diseases such as Sjögren's disease. We use ultrasound to look for changes in the structure of the tissue. These structural changes are mainly inside the gland and is a sign of Salivary gland disease. It is also possible to see small cysts in the gland and also signs of small obstructions in the salivary ducts, however, this is added information and is not the main reason for using ultrasound of the glands in rheumatology.
