The Head of Ultrasound Division of Glostrup Hospital, Prof. Lene Terslev , talks about using Doppler in daily clinical practice for assessing synovitis. Prof. Lene describes two different ways of grading the degree of inflammatory activity in patients using either a semi-quantitative scoring system or a quantitative scoring system.
The quantitative scoring system uses a continuous variable which is very sensitive to change. It is also less observer dependant, which may favour a comparison between different examinations in various studies.
The quantitative analysis program automatically calculates how many coloured pixels is covering the total amount of pixels in the outlined area of interest and provides a percentage score for more simplified grading. By taking away the Doppler outside of the outlined area a more accurate grading can be reached.
When using the Q-analysis which is a program available on the LOGIQ E10 ultrasound machine, we no longer have to do the analysis on an external PC but instead can be done immediately after the examination.
Whether using a semi-quantitative or quantitative the ROI needs to be defined.
