How To Ultrasound The Shoulder - Subscapularis

Subscapularis Ultrasound

Mark Maybury is a Research Physiotherapist and Sonographer. In this video, he carries out a live ultrasound demonstration of the Subscapularis located in the shoulder.

The Subscapularis Tendon is the largest and strongest muscle in the rotator cuff. It is located under the wing bone and originates at the Subscapular Fossa. The Subscapularis Tendon is also inserted into the Lesser Tubercle of the Humerus.

At the beginning of this video, Mark demonstrates how to locate the Subscapularis Tendon by using ultrasound imaging. He refers to placing the probe on the 'window' of the shoulder: this is another name for the Bicipital Groove, which can be found on the patients Humerus.

From the first ultrasound image, you will be able to see the BICEP Tendon. This is located in the centre of your screen and is on either side of the Greater and Lesser Tubercle.

Mark then moves the probe medially towards the Lesser Tubercle to present the Subscapularis Tendon. From here (while the patient's arm is in a neutral position) Mark can examine the tendon for any injuries or tears within the tendon.
